This is a collection of articles I designed as an intern at the Ensign and Liahona Magazines. These Magazines are owned and run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The magazines contain articles to help individuals find greater peace and direction as they follow Jesus Christ.

The article to left is all about Mental Health and I decided to accompany it will a maze motif. Navigating our own mental health can often seem like a bit of a maze and so I created maze typography that then extends into a graphic across both spreads. I wanted to create a design that was intriguing and that would draw a variety of readers in because I believe everyone on some level is dealing with navigating their own mental health.

This article is directed at young adults and is about a young woman navigating the pressures of being single, dating and getting married. The main point is that unhealthy pressure on yourself is not a good thing and so I wanted this to be communicated visually throughout the article. I thought that something else you would never want to pressure is a balloon and so I decided to use this motif. For the main spread I wanted the audience to see the balloon and wonder why it was being squished and wonder similarly why they put unhealthy pressure on themselves. To do the photography for my original concept, I hired and art directed the London based photography studio Ilka&Franz. I chose them for their unexpected and quirky style that I felt matched the subject matter.

The idea for this article came from the concept of growing light. The article is about how God has restored his Church to the Earth and continues to reveal truths to his Prophet and Apostles today as He did in times of old. To accompany this beautiful concept I created a linear light graphic that goes throughout the body of the 3 spread article. Lines come in from the side and join the consistent line in the middle, creating an abstract yet elegant representation of the concept of the article.

This article is about how a husband and wife must work together in order to create a successful marriage. In the article, this relationship is compared to an arch in that as husband and wife reach upwards towards heaven they are able to be strong together. Since the arch is such a strong theme within the article I decided to commission visuals that illustrated this concept. I did want to add another layer visually though so came up with the idea of showing an arch under construction. To do the art I hired and art directed Justin Wheatley because of his beautiful and simplistic architectural painting style.

This article is about teaching children the importance of and to enjoy work. My concept for this article is based loosely on a chore chart. I liked the idea that it is our “chore,” as adults to teach children the importance of their chores. I wanted the overall feel to be fun and exciting because the whole point of the article is that chores don’t have to be boring and monotonous and I wanted this to be reflected in the design.
